A Sydney woman has become cupid for a day, sneaking chocolates and notes into the mailboxes of strangers.

Melissa Lu told 9news.com.au she had seen work colleagues and friends "smile through sadness" as loved-up others received flowers and gifts on Valentine’s Day.

"They didn’t feel like they had someone to celebrate with," Ms Lu said.

Determined to spread a little bit of love, she asked her boyfriend, Lee, not to buy anything for her, and instead used the money to buy envelopes and chocolates.

The 26-year-old distributed the kind-hearted gifts to more than one hundred mail boxes in her area.

Recipients were encouraged to post photographs of the unexpected surprise on Instagram, using the hashtag #operationvalentinesdaylove.

Ms Lu said the goal of the random act of kindness was to "make people happy".

"I felt if I could make one person happy on the day that's more than enough for me. In this society I feel like people don't do enough to make others around them happy," she said.

"I can't wait to do more things like this when I can."
