9NEWS: Tourist comes face-to-face with great white shark off Victorian coast

A Chinese tourist has had a close encounter with a fierce great white shark while diving off Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Marshall Yu, 43, was finishing up a SCUBA diving trip off Gunnamatta Beach yesterday afternoon when he noticed a large shark lurking behind him.

“I was scared a little… I thought, ‘wow that’s a big shark’. I couldn’t run away,” Mr Yu, an interior designer visiting Australia from Shanghai, told 9news.com.au.

As the shark approached, Mr Yu’s “instincts kicked in” and he grabbed his underwater camera.

“I didn’t see any aggression… I made eye contact with it, (the shark) was pretty cute.”

Mr Yu’s video shows the shark, which he estimates was about “four metres long”, gliding through the water.

He said that the 45-second encounter with the apex predator was a “life highlight”.

“It was my favourite experience as a diver, for sure,” Mr Yu said.
